Extra Protein? + Free Music

So dinner last night was an Ashley-inspired feast. Slow+Low sweet potatoes, garlic spinach and Pour, Poke + Spread eggs!

It was absolutely delicious - until I found a cooked beetle in my spinach about 2/3 of the way through. It took everything in me to not throw up. In fact, I'm still dry heaving a bit just thinking about it.

I immediately called my boyfriend (who had been previously making fun of me for eating vegetables in the first place, the kid is such a hater) and relayed to him the horrible event. His response?

"What? You don't like a little extra protein?"

Not that kind.

Needless to say, I didn't eat anything for the rest of the day. I should market this as a diet strategy, I've never lost my appetite so quickly! Plus I think I'm going to be paranoid with my food for about the next month. No lie, I literally sifted through my oatmeal this morning. Just in case.

More whipped oats (sick of them yet?), this time with some summer berries.
  • 1/3 cup steel cut oats
  • 1/3 cup almond milk
  • 1/3 cup water
  • 1 Tbsp chia seeds
  • sprinkle of cinnamon
  • spritz of vanilla
  • dash of salt
If you haven't made these yet, I'm urging you to do so. Do it!!

jams.
Alright readers, you want to know what I listen to when I run? I'm gonna be honest, it's mostly techno. Something about the fast pace, the rhythym, the dirty bass - it just gets me going. But I don't listen to techno all the time, which is why I have not one, but TWO playlists for you!

I know. You love me (:

for the non-techno
If it's not techno, it's gotta make me want to move. I've found that a fast pace in music is an absolute essential for me. I really do run slower to slower songs. And I normally don't even realize it at the time! It's a tragic waste of my energy. However I have learned to use this to better my runs - by putting slower paced songs in the beginning of my playlists! This way, I don't start off sprinting like I usually sometimes do.

This is the playlist I used for my last three mile run:

By the way, I heart Grooveshark. Notice how my songs start off slower paced and end strong - cause I'm a winner baby! That's one of my favorite power songs right now. Talk about getting amped up! I feel ready to take on the world when my boy Jaime Foxx is on the line.

for the techno lovers.
I hope you guys don't mind a little vulgarity in music. Personally, it kinda gets me revved up. Is that weird? Please don't be frightened of me! I just find that it makes me push myself harder, but I am totally okay with you not feeling the same. With that in mind, I'm going to give you my current favorite techno run mix! Just click the link to download it.

DJ Doverspike is actually a very good friend of mine and he makes the mixes I run to the most. I love it when he adds songs he knows I like - they just make my runs so much better! So give the mix a try - I'll bet my bottom dollar you become obsessed like me. Then we can be twins! Or however-many-of-us-there-are-uplets.

In the end though, it really all comes down to what YOU like. What gets you pumped? What gets you focus? What gets you running like Rocky in Philly? Figure that out and you'll have the playlist of your dreams.

Favorite running songs - Let's hear em.

If we're lucky, maybe Doverspike will mix them all together for us. Fingers crossed! By the way, who all liked the Christina Aguilera throwback? Ohhh yeahhhhh (:

  1. YEA. I'm not the only person who loves Miley. Hand to the sky, I was rocking out to her this AM.

I refuse to talk about the beetle. I found bugs in my lettuce one time at a FANCY client dinner in NYC. AWFUL. I couldn't say anything because I didn't want to make a scene. Cringe!

  2. I run to techno too! I was so surprised to read that about you. I really like Basshunter and Groove Coverage. But really, I just love whenever I find a techno cover of a popular song I like.

  3. I LOVE Basshunter!! His songs a bit girlie - but the beats are the best!

I think we just became best friends.

  6. Bless your heart. I found a bug in my bowl of cauliflower the other day, and I nearly heaved too. It is hard to make sure that all those buggies are out of my veggies (especially since I buy mostly organic).

  11. Wow, those sweet potatoes look really good - I made some sweet potato fries last night but they weren't as crispy as I was hoping - maybe I'll try this method instead. And I feel you on the beetle - last week I was eating some broccoli from my boyfriends' parents garden and realized halfway through that there were a couple cooked millipedes (?) in mine - yuck! Probably ate a couple at least before I saw them! Oh well, like you said - protein!

  14. I've been wanting to get the new Eminem and Rihanna song! It's ok for running? I know it's great for singing really loudly in the confines of a car :)
I love Grooveshark! It's always open when I'm at work.

  16. Oh my God no, the beetle would have had me barfing on the floor. Terrible!

I love your playlist! Great taste in music - especially the La Roux and Enrique (I hate that I like that song, but I can't deny it!). Stronger by Kanye West is a go-to song for me, plus anything by Cavo, Maroon 5, Lady Gaga, or Rise Against.

  17. I like a little techno mixed with non-techno as well. At the moment I'm loving Commander by Kelly Rowland & David Guetta, Touch by Natasha Bedingfield, and I Like It by Enrique!

  21. I just stumbled upon your blog and love it! I can't stop listening to "Love The Way You Lie," "Dynamite" and "Shark In The Water" by V.V. Brown :)

  22. Ick! Tell me you didn't bite into the beetle? I don't think I would eat for a very long time if that happened to me. Want to hear some gross things? A couple days ago I bought some organic broccoli and when I went to cook with it I found that it was INFESTED with little spiderish bugs. Something grosser? I was eating pistachios and when I bit into one that felt extra crunchy.. I looked down and saw half of a petrified bug poking out.

I love running to techno! Nothing beats listening to that for exercising or dancing. It's amazing.

  23. LOVE THESE SONGS TOO! :D Haha sometimes I feel embarrassed for listening to such mainstream songs but now I don't feel so bad. Sorry for the buggy fiasco!! Ack! I've gone through the same thing before. Took me a while to get over it... I'd sift through rice, pasta, and grain products like that. Anyway, might I just say that your sweet potatoes look amazing!! :)

  24. I have to say, I pretty much have an identical playlist at the moment. That's so funny!

I didn't know you could incorporate a Grooveshark playlist in a post! Wow, so easy and fun. Might need your trick for that :)

  25. Thanks for the music suggestions! I may have to give techno a try. Currently I'm loving B.O.B.!

  26. Okay bug in food is life scarring. I'm glad to hear you're okay.

Please tell me at some point you incorporate Sandstorm by Darude in your running playlist. If you want techno, that's a must have.

  27. I like the MSTRKRFT's remix of Wolfmother's Woman. It is also my "stripper" song (like that song that WOULD be your stripper song). I'm classy, ya know.
